The thing about being deliberate is just that…you have to be deliberate; not everything can be left for chance. Living a deliberate life means that each step you take has meaning and purpose.
Today as I (Mia) was walking out of the juice shop, I saw a man by the side of the road, he was a bit slumped over, taking a break from standing and holding his sign which simply read "hungry." Before I knew what was happening, my feet had made a deliberate B-line towards him-- and there I was just sitting and talking, not really thinking much of it.
Then my feet took another deliberate walk across the street to grab a sandwich (and maybe a cookie, a super healthy chocolate chip brownie cookie) to share lunch with my new friend.
We talked and hung out together for close to an hour. We laughed, we talked about Jesus, we talked about life on the street and the struggles that it brings. For fear that people would wonder why a homeless man has a phone, Kevin discretely showed me, what he called, his "Obama Phone", which he laughed and said, "Where do they think homeless people are gonna plug these in?" You see, these are things that I don't think of.
Kevin shared stories of his past jobs and the day work he does now, which still makes it impossible for him to pay the bills that come with owning and renting a home…so the street is where he lays his head. Through the several years of walking the Phoenix Valley, his jacket and his backpack remain his sole possessions. A week earlier he had few more items, but Kevin has gotten used to the reality that what he has will eventually be stolen.
Sometimes, our deliberate steps come almost unbeknownst to us, simply because of the deliberation that has taken place in our hearts beforehand. As we daily consider the Word of God in our life, the way Jesus lived and loved, we may find ourselves on the side of the road sharing a sandwich, sitting on a fire hydrant and hugging a new friend.
I kind of think that if Jesus was walking around in the flesh today, that just may be where we would find Him.
