SHE HEARD:KATIE DAVIS OF AMAZIMA MINISTRIES

27 year old wife, mother of 13 adopted young women, and founder of Amazima Ministries

At the age of 18 Katie embarked on a short term mission trip from Brentwood, Tennessee to Uganda for the first time. Less than a year later in the summer of 2007 she returned to Uganda as a kindergarten teacher with a heart for the people and new discoveries regarding the needs of the children in this country. As she walked some of her students home, Katie began to realize that there were many, many more school-aged children on the streets. Most schools in Uganda require school fees to attend. With this information, God laid it on Katie’s heart to take a different approach to education, and she began an Education Sponsorship Outreach program that worked to match orphaned and vulnerable children with sponsors all over the world.

THE MISSION:
TO LIVE OUT THE LOVE OF JESUS BY EDUCATING AND EMPOWERING THE PEOPLE OF UGANDA AND THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE

With the original intention of signing up a handfull of children Katie, closed out the 2008 year with 150 kids signed up. Today this program sponsors over 700 children and with the help of more sponsors has the potential to cater to the needs of many more.

Katie is humble enough to admit the process that led her to this point. She said, “I would like to say that I had all kinds of great ideas about what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. I would like to say my ministry was born out of a carefully thought-out plan. These things simply aren’t true, though. I was walking through life one moment at a time, blown away by what God could do through me if I simply said yes.” What powerful words those are. Such a simple concept to realize that no plan is needed just a willingness to hear God and answer Him with a simple, Yes!

For those feeling a call to the mission field you must hear and ponder Katie’s beautiful testimony. Move past thinking that you are incapable and move into a season of yes. Katie stated the beauty of the constant need wonderfully when she said, “We bend. I bend to sweep crumbs and I bend to wipe vomit and I bend to pick up little ones and wipe away tears… And at the end of these days I bend next to the bed and I ask only that I could bend more, bend lower. Because I serve a Savior who came to be a servant. He lived bent low. And bent down here is where I see His face. He lived, only to die. Could I? Die to self and just break open for love. This Savior, His one purpose to spend Himself on behalf of messy us. Will I spend myself on behalf of those in front of me? And people say, ‘Don’t you get tired?’ and yes, I do. But I’m face to face with Jesus in the dirt, and the more I bend the harder and better and fuller this life gets. And sure, we are tired, but oh we are happy. Because bent down low is where we find fullness of Joy.”
